Welcome to our coverage at Fantasy In Frames regarding recent 2026 Fantasy Football Breaking News: David Montgomery Being Traded To The Houston Texans!
Hi, it’s Aidan, back in your digital lives once again. The NFL news just keeps on coming, which is 100% fine by me, because I absolutely love it. I am obsessed with bringing you all the best content possible, and I’m here again today to do just that. Next week is going to be a whirlwind, an extremely fun whirlwind, as we are literally only a couple of days away from 2026 NFL Free Agency officially kicking off at the time of this writing.
Earlier this week, a significant fantasy-relevant trade went down, as the Detroit Lions traded RB David Montgomery to the Houston Texans for a 2026 fourth-round pick, a 2026 seventh-round pick, and OL Juice Scruggs. Detroit has been hinting that this could happen for weeks now, as the franchise wanted to give Montgomery the chance to become a bellcow once again. This deal accomplishes that.

I don’t know who needs to hear this at this point, but Jahmyr Gibbs is about to go absolutely NUCLEAR next season, more than he was already going to. The player is now right up there with Bijan Robinson as the RB1 in drafts next season. There is no more threat of Gibbs being pulled off the field in certain short-yardage/goal-line situations anymore. The young explosive RB is in line for a MASSIVE workload in 2026, in both the rushing and receiving game. Sure, the Lions could draft a high upside Day 3 RB this year, but that player will be nowhere near what David Montgomery was for the franchise over the last few years.
I don’t mean to beat a dead horse here, but I have talked a TON about how much the Houston Texans DESPERATELY needed an RB over the last couple of weeks, and the massive concerns I have with Woody Marks as a pure runner. I’m not going to go over it again, but let’s just say that the deeper metrics out there paint a VERY bad picture for the player. Sure Marks could mix in on certain passing downs here and there during the season, but for all intents and purposes, David Montgomery is going to handle the bulk of the workload for the Houston Texans in 2026.
David Montgomery is not necessarily flashy or overly dynamic as an athlete, but he is very consistent/reliable and gets the job done. This is not a very explosive player, but he was stuffed on less than half of his runs in 2025, showcasing his ability to find positive yardage when given the ball. David Montgomery also ranked 12th in yards after contact per attempt last season amongst all RBs that received at least 100 carries, per the Fantasy Points Data Suite.
Once the summer rolls around this year, I will absolutely be investing in a “boring veteran” like David Montgomery in the middle rounds of drafts. The player has a CLEAR runway to the end zone, and you know that DeMeco Ryans loves to run the football as a defensive-minded head coach. It’s a great situation, really.
