Fantasy Football Trends for Week 5

Welcome to Fantasy Football Trends for Week 5!

Last week was a good encapsulation of what I’m trying to achieve with this article, highlighting Woody Marks’ increasing usage to help you get one step ahead of your league mates. With injuries relentlessly plaguing fantasy managers and bye weeks starting this week, roster depth is even more critical. So here are four data points that help to keep tracking as we enter week 5.

1.       Stefon Diggs’ 41% target share

The veteran has had a slow start in New England, but he had his best outing of the season in week 4. Diggs has seen his playing time slowly increase over the last few games, playing on a season-high 63% of snaps in Week 4 against the Panthers. This resulted in another season-high 101 receiving yards from his seven targets and six receptions. Diggs led the team in targets, four more than the next highest in Kayshon Boutte, and a 41% target share. His yards per route run, meanwhile, hit a ridiculous 5.61.

It’s still less than a year since Diggs’ ACL injury, so we should slowly expect his usage to increase over the coming weeks. It is clear, however, that Diggs is becoming a full-time player. He’s a solid flex play again this week in a revenge game against division rivals, the Buffalo Bills.

2.       Brashard Smith’s 25% snap share

Similar to the aforementioned Marks, Brashard Smith is another rookie whose usage we should be tracking. The running back whom the Chiefs selected in the seventh round of this year’s draft played on a season-high 25% of snaps in week 4, rushing four times for nine yards and reeling in three catches (four targets) for 27 yards through the air.

While we haven’t seen any spectacular numbers yet, there are clear opportunities. Both Pacheco and Hunt continue to underperform; the Chiefs may look for more juice from Smith, who profiles as a solid receiver and a change-of-pace back. We shouldn’t expect Smith to ever see a workhorse role due to his size, but given the lacklustre play from the two veterans, there’s a clear path to more touches – particularly in the passing game.

3.       Tyler Allgeier’s 48% running back rush share

Allgeier has consistently shown himself to be a very capable running back during his first three years in the league, and he has again demonstrated his role behind Bijan Robinson so far this season. In week 4, Allgeier handled 16 rushing attempts, just one fewer than Robinson, equating to 48% of the backfield touches.

Allgeier has now seen at least ten rushing attempts in three of the Falcons’ four games this season, with the Panthers’ blowout the only exception. And this is the key takeaway from Allgeier’s production so far this season – the most productive fantasy outings have been in wins for the team. His usage as a pass catcher remains minimal, with Robinson seeing 23 targets so far this season while Allgeier has seen just three. If we can predict when the Falcons have a positive game script, Allgeier may prove to be a viable fantasy asset through the bye weeks.

4.       Kendre Miller’s 31% snap share

After essentially a non-existent first two years in the NFL, Kendre Miller is slowly starting to make his mark in the New Orleans backfield. In week four, Miller hit a season-high 12.5 PPR points, rushing 11 times for 65 yards and a touchdown. This equated to a 42% backfield rush share, with Kamara seeing 15 rushing attempts. He has also seen his snap share increase each week, reaching 31% last week.

In games where the Saints can run teams close, Miller may hold low-end flex appeal. And with trade rumors swirling around Kamara, there also remains the potential for an even greater share of touches.
